Oceanlab presents: 'Sirens of The Sea'

We are pleased to announce that the OceanLab Album - 'Sirens of the Sea' will be released on the 21st of July 2008.

Ibiza - the birthplace of modern dance music. 20 years on and the island remains an important catalyst for today?s hottest dance talents. This year, OceanLab, the project featuring Above & Beyond and singer/songwriter Justine Suissa spent several weeks holed up in a villa there finishing their debut album, ?Sirens Of The Sea?.

Steeped in Balearic brilliance, ?Sirens Of The Sea? is a mix of blissed out epics and dancefloor cuts. An album of depth, variety and serene beauty, showcasing a level of songwriting and production rarely witnessed within electronic music, and already drawing comparisons with bands such as Zero 7 and Everything But The Girl.

As OceanLab, Tony, Paavo and Jono?s work with Justine has led to a string of club anthems such as ?Clear Blue Water? (Top 50 UK Sales Chart), ?Sky Falls Down? and ?Beautiful Together?, with each release adding to OceanLab's reputation as one of clubland's best loved vocal dance projects. They crossed into the mainstream consciousness when their 4th single, ?Satellite?, was A-listed on Radio 1 and broke into the Top 20 of the UK sales chart, enjoying similar success globally.

The first single from the album will be "Miracle" featuring Above & Beyond Club Mix, Michael Cassette, Martin Roth and Fletch remixes out on 14th July.

OceanLab Exclusive Interview

Ques: The album was written in Ibiza ? is this is particularly special place for you all? Why was the decision made to write it there?

Tony: By the end of last year we had about twenty songs that all sounded very different and we needed to start deciding what songs were going to be on the album and how they were going to sound. We wanted to get away from the phones and DJ routine and label worries, clear our heads and really knuckle down. I?ve been going to Ibiza every year for twelve years, so it was high on my list of favourite places to go, but Ibiza was a natural choice for everyone in the end ? its convenient to get to and a really, idyllic beautiful island. We had an unforgettable three weeks there and really knocked the album into shape.


Ques: The sea and beaches seem to be a recurring theme for OceanLab, is there any particular reason for this?

Paavo: We?re all massive fans of places like Formentera that have beaches with clear blue water; hence the song title!

Justine: The success of our first single, ?Clear Blue Water?, seemed, in a way, to define us. We were the band with the water themed name and the water themed single with the singer who had to writhe around in freezing fire hydrant water for the water themed video. I think that when we were writing the third single we might have been trying to keep the theme going, but with the album we just gave way to the song-writing and let the band name influence us when we felt like it. I think, as Tony and I are both scuba divers, we must have a natural obsession with the sea!


Ques: Where did the name OceanLab come from?

Justine: You?ll have to ask the boys that! That was definitely an ?Above And Beyond? decision. Although of course I gave the nod of approval.

Paavo: When writing 'Clear Blue Water' together we were talking about what we all love and it's sea and beaches. OceanLab sounded perfect for us, the rest is history as they say!


Ques: How did you meet Justine?

Tony: Justine was working in a really high-end bathroom shop opposite the Warner Brothers offices, and one day I went in to enquire after a lovely rug in the window. And there I spied this gorgeous girl behind the counter. I asked if I could get a discount on the rug if I took Justine to lunch and, amazingly, she said yes! And we became friends, although I never bought the rug ? Justine bought it for Christmas for me a couple of years back. I had no idea she was a singer at the time, the Chicane thing came along after we?d been friends for a long time. But obviously I was keen to do some music with her once Above & Beyond started.

Jono: I met Justine through Tony. Tony knew of an ?amazing singer?, and we wanted to start writing some songs together. We arranged to meet and have a try in the studio together and that was that!


Ques: Justine - as Tony, Paavo and Jono already work together, did you find it hard to get used to their production styles and writing methods?

Justine: When I first met Jono and Paavo they had really only just started working with Tony who was an old friend of mine. In the early days I was never around for production so it wasn?t an issue. For the album, however, we have all been working on it together and although styles differ somewhat from person to person we always manage to get our respective points across in the end! The writing aspect is always fun and rewarding no matter how many of us are involved at any one time.


Ques: What do you all do to unwind after a long session in the studio?

Tony: We had some lovely Spanish dinners in Ibiza town ? I?d like to do more of that!

Justine: I drive home in silence.

Jono: If I need to unwind I go to the gym, meet with friends and finish with a sauna/steam room or jacuzzi. Sometimes the cycle home from the studio is also relaxing.

Paavo: Well, I used to pop out to the bar for a drink with friends, but these days I do some yoga and meditate: the ultimate way to chill in my opinion!

Ques: How do you find your song writing as a group has progressed since your first releases?

Tony: ?Clear Blue Water? was the only thing we?ve done that isn?t a full blown song, but we tried to get as much of a story in there as we could. Ever since then we?ve been trying really hard to write songs that will stick. OceanLab songs are used to teach European kids to speak English, you know! Satellite is in an English textbook for Spanish and Italian school kids so they can learn proper, like, English, like, you know what I mean?


Ques: Will you be doing any live performances or an OceanLab tour?

Jono: I'd definitely like to perform live as OceanLab. It would be particularly interesting to do some smaller more intimate performances, perhaps even acoustically.

The fans have been waiting for the arrival of the OceanLab album for a long time. With so much pressure from the fans, how hard did you find it compiling the final tracklist?

Tony: There were lots of issues to think about when picking the songs, but the pressure from the fans wasn?t really an issue. It was more to do with what voice we wanted the record to have.


Ques: Do you each have a favourite track from the album?

Paavo: I don't know about the others, mine would be the movie mix of ?Breaking Ties?.

Justine: I don?t really have a favourite. I love ?Ashes? because it is such an unexpected song for the album and just materialized one afternoon during a song-writing session but I also love Breaking Ties. ?Sirens? does hold a special place in my heart though as it has taken five years to be released since it first came about. The first time I heard the demo backing track I fell in love with it and the song came from that initial feeling and a particular state of mind at the time.

Tony: ?Breaking Ties? and ?On The Beach?.

Jono: I can't pick a favourite, but I think ?Ashes? has a very special atmosphere about it. I also think ?If I Could Fly? has some of the strongest and most touching verses Justine has ever written and I love her delicate vocal performance. It can sometimes feel that way for all of us!


Ques: Justine, your underwater photoshoot looks incredible, how hard did you find it posing for those pictures?

Justine: Mmmm, I found it as hard as I usually find it posing for pictures. I?d much rather be behind the camera than in front of it. Still, being made up by Phyllis Cohen, a world class make-up artist who has prettied up the likes of Diana Ross, Annie Lennox, Tina Turner, Sinead O?Connor, Chaka Khan? I could go on? was a real privilege. She was a lot of fun too which relaxed me.


Ques: With four strong creative minds contributing to the same tracks, did you have any disputes and if so how did you resolve them?

Paavo: We try and look at the fact that we all have different views as a benefit, and remembering that when we have a disagreement about where a track should go has really helped, but I don?t think we would?ve survived our writing trip to Ibiza without chocolate biscuits and cups of tea!


Ques: If you could have a guest musician, dead or alive, appearing on any of the album tracks who would it be and on which track?

Justine: I really had to think about this one because I love so many musicians. However, Imogen Heap is an unsung heroine of song -writing and she has a beautiful and addictive voice. I haven?t stopped playing her self-produced album ?Speak For Yourself? since I picked it up last year. I think ?Secret? would work well with both our voices.

Tony: My Dad. He wasn?t much of a piano player but it would be nice to see him again.

Jono: That?s a really tricky one for me to answer as I think OceanLab (or any band) is unique because of it?s current mix of people?. But I?d love to resurrect Miles Davis for a jam and to bring out some of Justine?s jazzier tones! I?d also love to see what Boom Jinx could bring to the table. He?s still alive thankfully!

Paavo: I would have loved to work on the strings for 'Miracle' with Jean Sibelius - that guy was a genius with chords!


Ques: If you were stranded at sea, what one item would you want with you?

Tony: The QE2.

Justine: A flare. Ever the practical girl.

Jono: The first thing that popped into my head was a flare! Man?s instinct to survive, I suppose?

Paavo: A compass (I love sailing!)


Ques: The OceanLab sound crosses genres and appeals to both a dance music audience and to a more laid back crowd. How did you find a balance between the chilled out vibe and the upbeat club sounds? Does one theme dominate on this album?

Paavo: We?ve been writing this album very much from each song?s point of view and tried to show each in the most powerful light possible. This lead to an album that?s got quite a lot of variety in styles, and the demo versions of the tracks have lived on our iphones for months in their different guises. It?s been really interesting to start to understand the collection of tracks that finally made it as an album, and it seems that on each listen I get something different out of the album. I?d say that if Tri-State was a ?clubby? album, ?Sirens of the Sea? is definitely a more chilled out. Tri-State ranked by many as a great cd to play at pre/after parties, whilst I?ve found listening to ?Sirens of the Sea? best the ?day after?.

Jono: The album is not meant for club play, but we will certainly be remixing the tracks for club play. Great songs tend to come more naturally in a non-club music context, but that's not to say that they can't also manifest in dance music. I think the listener will have to conclude what the theme is. Justine is an incredibly good song-writer.

Y con ustedes señoras y señores sin hacer falta que estemos en Diciembre les presento: El mejor disco Vocal-Trance del 2008!

En mi opinión:

Por un lado tenemos al trío trance... Son geniales! Above & Beyond son hoy en día unos de mis productores de melodic-trance favoritos! Su sonido es MUY trance, es realmente imposible que no a uno no le guste ese sonido tan catchy que tienen. Los temas de Above & Beyond logran siempre ese objetivo claro de encerrar al que lo escuche en un estado de trance muy agradable y a la vez particularmente diferente del sonido de sus colegas.

Y por otro lado Justine Suissa, y qué decir esta mujer con aires tán serenos? La adoro, me encanta esa voz de MUJER (léjos la idea de vocalización de Kirsty Hawkshaw que es una voz de pito maricona total..) que le permite jugar alto y bajo con cada tema que ella quiera, párrafo aparte para ella al decir que es una cantante (en profesión) a diferencia de otras nenitas que cantan con Mic en sus PC's y en vivo se hacen pis encima...

Oceanlab: Es una banda maravillosa, la combinación de estos 4 monstrúos es terrible! Su single 'Satellite' es un CLASSIC que rasja corazones y suelos por donde suene... Las líricas oscilan entre grandes poesías y otras no tan cargadas de pasajes líricos: Cuentan historias de vida, amor, sentimientos, sensasiones a un nivel maduro y sensato.

No me gustan el 100% de sus temas(wish I would), y a partir de eso recalco la grandeza que desde que tuve noción de su existencia incluyendo la investigación que no están en el medio hace 2 años.. Debo admirar que Oceanlab tiene un sonido propio y MAMÁ QUE SONIDO Y QUE VOZ!!! Y eso ya lo vuelve único...


Bueno basta, quiero ese Álbum versión UK!!!!! (L)(L)(L)(L)


no falta mucho para mi cumple.. :P

Y espero que NO salgan muchos remixes... Oceanlab no necesita apoyos extras para sonar como suenan ;-)

Uf y ahora que lo pienso, desde que sacaron 'Tri-State' que no ha aparecido un disco que me rompa la cabeza... Ni Imagine, ni In between y menos que menos Elements of Death...

Para mi la voz de Justine es ÚNICA....

Breaking Ties-

Lejos el mejor track del disco, más allá de que suena muy lindo, la letra es maravillosa. Para mi va a estar entre los mejores 5 tracks a fin de año...

Buenisimo, no se podia esperar otra cosa de Oceanlab.

Esperemos que en algun momento pueda estar por aca para escuchar esos vocals voladores y algunas cositas mas que tienen oculta.

Precioso el disco...q bien les salen las cosas a estos 4 juntos..las melodías son muy bellas y los lyrics me estan matandooo.
Recomendadísimo!

A ver:

En una simple pasada del disco escucho lindos temas, la voz de Justine de más está decirlo...y muchos de los temas q están en el disco estan hechos para un remix futuro, pero bueno, para mi no supera a Tri-State ni a palos!

Con esto quiero enfocar MI PUNTO DE VISTA y no generar un enfrentamiento con nadie, solo q como leí esta comparación quise sacarme la duda de esto...

Jajajajajaja, no sabés que en realidad yo pensaba que exageré un poco el Tri-State es una bestialidad, pero el Sirens a mi parecer le pelea bastante.. Lo lindo de ésto es que ambos son 2 discazos hechos por los mismos artistas :D

No digo q Sirens sea un mal disco, x el contrario hay muchos temas a tener en cuenta, y bue...encima q en este se incluya la voz de Justine (L)

Sin embargo, como bien pones, Tri-State creo yo es uno de esos discos q no te cansas NUNCA de escucharlo, es tan pero tan bueno...para mi los 10 no existen (ya q tienen q ser PERFECTOS) pero estuvo arañando ese puntaje....q disco!!
Pero como bien pones...estos 2 discos fueron producidos x los mismos artistas, esto demuestra más aun lo q son los Above como producers, creo los MEJORES!

Igual hablando de Sirens...espero con ansias los remixes q estén saliendo...x lo pronto el remix de Miracle q hicieron los Above es muy lindo, no tan así el q hizo Martin Roth, q sin embargo no me parece tan mal remix....

Esperaba mas de este disco, llega a tornarse algo monotono tanta melosidad sin variantes en algunos pasajes del disco; se encuentra muy lejos de Tri-State, ese si fue un discazo. Ojo no es mal disco, pero esperaba mas sabiendo del potencial de Oceanlab

Aun asi, coincido en que supera por lejos a Imagine, EOL e In Between

la verdad no soy muy fan del vocal trance melodico,es mas dentro del genero del trance es el q menos me gusta

el disco en si me parece bien producido,quizas esperaba mas melodia y algo de unos bpms mas,pero resalta bastante la voz y no la melodia,cosa q no me gusta para nada cuando la musica se acopla a la liryca y no al reves

dentro del cd creo q me gusto 1 solo track,y como lo escuche,no lo voy a escuchar mas ya q no es mi estilo

btw... comparar este disco con el de tiesto/armin y pvd no es lo mas conveniente ya q son cosas muy distintas y solo se basa en gustos

Que comparacion es esa? Tiesto,Armin y PvD con sus respectivos discos y este de Above and Beyond, creo que desde mi punto de vista no tienen nada en que compararse.

Como le decia hoy a Jonny Jonny, escuche hasta Miracle y no me termina de convenzer ni sorprender, se roba el CD la voz de Justine realmente pero en cuanto a calidad y melodia es bastante "chato" como bien dijo mi amigo Jonny, es un CD para que pronto escuchemos muy buenos remix. Lo de Tri-State es fuera de lo normal.

Me falta escuchar mas del 50% del CD pero ya veo que no me va a terminar conformando en lo mas minimo, aclaro que el vocal no es de mi estilo preferido dentro del genero.

En fin creo que le sacas la vos de Justine y el CD queda en pelotas total.

todavia no lo termine de escuchar y no le llega ni a los talones a tri-state...ese cd es un orgasmo cosmico de 1 hora, 14 minutos y 47 segundos xD

Yo creo que no solo ya NO tiene ni punto de comparacion con TRI-STATE si no que habria que preguntarse realmente si el CD vale la pena! Me resulta cada dia mas aburrido, chato y sin una coherencia.

A mi personalmente me encanto el disco, no se si compararlo con Tri State... es un disco nuevo, es lo que estan haciendo... mirandolo desde 0 es un disco que me encanta.

Espero que llegue pronto aca, no lo vi en las disquerias :(

Es un disco diferente, no es "trance", es para disfrutar en la tranquilidad del hogar para dejarse llevar por las letras y los sonidos tranquilizadores.. Obviamente no todos lo van a apreciar de esa forma, mejor! =)

no se si supera al anterior,, pero estoy frime en la conviccion que es el mejor material vocal trance del 2008, es finismiso, muy bien producido, bien llevado , y con un acople de los vocals a los sytnhs increible,,,,,es como dijeron arriba,,,, para disfrutar, y sacarle sonrisas al oido, no creo que el est disco tenga el propoisto de romper cabezass, sino mas bien parami es un trabajo de produccion donde se pryecta la esencia trance verdadera con todoso elementos que lo hacen uestilo volador y uno disfruta de las melodias,,,,
es algo distitno a las produccions trance actuales,,, esto tiene imorntade originalidad trabajo en grupo y seriedad

Un poco de esencia trance! Para salir del trance cartonero de 140 bpms con las bajaditas de 3 minutos y los explotes calesiteros de siempre que encima se parecen unos a otros una y otra y otra y ooooootr...ZzZzZzZzZzZzZ......

Claramente los temas no son para la pista...y como ya dije, Oceanlab tiene un sonido tan lindo q mas allá de q no presente innovación me atrae por la belleza de sus melodías, por lo menos conmigo, la fórmula funciona.
Últimamente es el hit de mi hogar(L)

bueno, con ese fin la verdad que esta muy bueno, el disco a mi no me parece malo. yo saque el tema de tri-state porq lei unos cuantos posts arriba que se atreevian a compararlo... y al verdad que no existe comparacion como bien dijo kaska...pero si, para escucharlo en la paz del hogar y relajarse esta muy bueno...

Hubieras puesto [Aly & Fila] y resumias todo lo que querias explicar, ojo que VOS pienses asi no quiere decir que realmente Aly & Fila sea eso. Te ahorrabas el escribir tantas palabras.

Si tuviera que dar argumentos diria que este CD no me gusta por que no tiene explotes calesiteros (interesante forma de expresarse) ni un TRANCE CARTONERO (perfecto). asi?

Me encanta... Breaking Ties se lleva para mi todo el disco. Ahora falta que salgan sus 897546541 de remixes de cada uno de sus tracks como pasó con Tri-State :P...

Lo escuche muuuchas veces y la verdad que este disco para mi la rompe. Es increíble los temas que tiene. Son de esos discos como dicen arriba para escuchar en tu casa tranquilo solo/a o con tu chica/o y disfrutar del mejor vocal trance.
Hay algo también importante que me ha pasado con este CD y es que gente que no tiene nada que ver con el tema de la ME lo escucho y se han quedado mas que satisfechos con esta producción lo que me refleja de alguna forma como Tri-State y Sirens of the Sea son como una pausa de todo lo comercial, algo totalmente distinto al resto (claramente). También creo que vale mencionar los discos de Another Day of Terrance y el nuevo Sunny Tales ambos de Sunlounger que me pasa algo parecido cuando los escucho aunque se por supuesto que no son iguales?

KasKa, nuevamente acuerdo con vos. Cuando lo escuché sentí lo mismo que pusiste, Justine se roba el disco porque lo que pasa de fondo, es más de lo mismo.

Me encantó "Sirens...", una belleza. Sobre todo el tema nº 7: On A Good Day... qué divino! Estuve toda la semana con él (L)(L)(L)

Es la realidad, a este disco le sacas las vocales de Justine y queda totalmente en bolas, seria desastroso.

Bueno claro...es q Oceanlab ES con Justine...los temas fueron concebidos con su voz en ellos, mas allá de q lo q más te guste del disco sea la voz de ella, pensar en que sería de los temas sin los vocals es como pensar q sería de tu sandwich si le sacás el jamón y el queso...deja de ser sandwich!
Igual bueno, cuestión de gustos...a algunos nos gusta mas y a otros menos..

No pasa por la voz de Justine, a lo que voy es que si a esta CD le pones por ejemplo las vocales de Audrey, salen todos corriendo y al CD no lo compra ni el Padrino de Audrey.

El disco está orientado a ser Chill-Trance/Acoustic, desde ese partir no se puede pedir más que eso... Sacale los vocals y va a sonar a Chill/Ambient/DownTempo o hasta en un punto de vista no electrónico suene un poco Country... Como se mencioné más arriba ésto es la escencia...

Yo entiendo lo que queres decir, pero a la larga o a la corta al CD le sacas la voz de Justine y le pones otra voz y seguramente pasa desapercibido, y no lo escucha nadie.

A mi parecer creo no tenemos que hacer una critica seccionada o invidualizada de los elementos que constituyen un track un disco o un estilo, sino caemos en una falacia de composicion, que de crrer que por que el vocal es bueno el tema es bueno, o la ivzceversa, si la estrcutura melodica acustica no tiene cierto grado de complejidad, accesoriamente el track va ser malo
Creo que hay que ser mas objetivo, mirar por arriba y analizar la totalidad, y la imagen global que deja en este caso el disco de oceanlab...
En micaso y segun mi punto de vista, el disco transmite verdadera esencia trance, dsde la fineza de los vocals. hasta el trabajo de produccion, que si bienn no esss waaaua no tiene 30 samplers y bitjumps, y chors y stringss super elaboradas..estaperfectamente idealizado. y apunta a un trabajo y un pryecto MUSICAL....
Creo que no hay que catalogar si es chill trance, tech trance odown tempo,, para mi ess algo distinto y tan original que admite a calificarlo como verdadera MUSICA.

Esto es lo que hace que el TRANCE sea diferente a los otros estilos de música electrónica... Siempre pensé que el trance sin los golpes de fondo sería hermoso, y así lo es.

Y eso qué tiene que ver? Cualquiera tú planteo...

me parece que estan exagerando un poco.. demasiado...

comparar este cd con el tri-state es como comparar elements of life con nyana, o in between con reflections..

Sinceramente lo escuche solo una vez y muy por arriba (lo bajé ayer). Me gustó muchísimo.
Obviamente, cuando se anunció el lanzamiento de este nuevo disco, ya sabía lo que iba a escuchar. A las personas que le gusta lo que hacen los A&B y más aún OceanLab, sabíamos que nos íbamos a encontrar con un disco así, muy lindo por cierto.
Y si quieren compararlo con Tri State, dudo que haya algún disco que lo supere.
